When our values change

Your values are being edited in the background. You can let it happen, or take the wheel.

Look back far enough and you will meet a stranger wearing your name. Things that once felt non-negotiable to that person seem small now. Traits they prized, you have let go of. Opinions they held with total certainty make you wince a little today. And every bit of it is what carried you to where you stand now.

It is worth actually doing. Sit back and picture who you were a few years ago. Did you change hard, or did you double down and deepen what you already believed? Usually it is both. You quietly dropped some things and gripped others tighter.

The reasons values shift are not mysterious. You gather experience every day, everything you see, do, read and feel leaves a mark, and from that pile your mind keeps updating its conclusions about how to live. As a child you mostly inherit your family’s values by copying them. Then the world widens, friends, strangers, their families, all running on different settings, and the friction reshapes you. And quietly underneath all of it runs the media you take in, the books, the feeds, the voices in your ears. Everything you consume is casting a vote on who you become.

Here is the part most people miss. This is happening whether or not you are paying attention. Your values are being edited in the background, by your environment, by whatever you let in by default. Which means you have a choice you may not have noticed you had. You can let the drift happen to you, or you can take the wheel, decide which traits you actually admire, choose what you let shape you, and steer.

I try to do exactly that, gather the qualities I respect, steer away from the ones that do not fit who I want to be. I would not be here without every past version of me, even the ones I have outgrown. Change is coming regardless. The only question is whether you are driving.

Keep building,
